At tricky logical twists, when evidence is needed most, author is simply switching to a new topic. I can not say that the author is lying. Only that he did not present evidence and make story so compelling for believers that I smell fraud.

Want a reason to FINALLY stick to your diet? Yep, study the diet of the Asian people! Lots of statistics, but it makes me wonder a little bit between correlation and causation...

I started reading this and it was a gift from my mother in law who is very health conscious. I quickly realized that actually I don't want to read a book whose whole goal is to make me stressed about eatting certain foods. Maybe others will enjoy it but I already know more vegetables is better so why add more guilt to my occasional bacon?

pg3: "Some of the findings, published in the most reputable scientific journals, show that:
> dietary change can enable diabetic patients to go off their medication.
> heart disease can be reversed with diet alone.
> breast cancer is related to levels of female hormones in the blood, which are determined by the food we eat.
> consuming dairy foods can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
> antioxidants, found in fruits and vegetables, are linked to better mental performance in old age.
> kidney stones can be prevented by a healthy diet.
These findings demonstrate that a good diet is the most powerful weapon we have against disease and sickness. An understanding of this scientific evidence is not only important for improving health; it also has profound implications for our entire society."

pg6: Studying the biochemical details of cancer formation: "What we found was shocking. Low-protein diets inhibited the initiation of cancer by aflatoxin, regardless of how much of this carcinogen was administered...Low-protein diets also dramatically blocked subsequent cancer growth. In other words, the cancer-producing effects of this highly carcinogenic chemical were rendered insignificant by a low-protein diet. In fact, dietary protein proved to be so powerful in its effect that we could turn on and turn off cancer growth simply by changing the level consumed.
Furthermore, the amounts of protein being fed were those that we humans routinely consume...
But that's not all. We found that not all proteins had this effect...Casein, which makes up 87% of cow's milk protein, promoted all stages of the cancer process...the safe proteins were from plants, including wheat and soy.

pg7: "I went on to direct the most comprehensive study of diet, lifestyle, and disease ever done with humans in the history of biomedical research...This project eventually produced more than 8,000 statistically significant associations between various dietary factors and disease!
What made this project especially remarkable is that, among the many associations that are relevant to diet and disease, so many pointed to the same finding: people who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease. Even relatively small intakes of animal-based food were associated with adverse effects. People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease. these results could not be ignored...
These findings show that heart disease, diabetes and obesity can be reversed by a healthy diet. The research shows that various cancers, autoimmune diseases, bone health, kidney health, vision and brain disorders in old age (like cognitive function and Alzheimer's) are convincingly influences by diet. Most importantly, the diet that has time and again been shown to reverse and/or prevent these diseases is the whole foods, plant-based diet. The scientific findings are consistent."

pg19: "I can confidently state that one of the major sources of public confusion about nutrition is this: far too often, we scientists focus on details while ignoring the larger context. For example, we pin our efforts and our hopes on one isolated nutrient at a time...We oversimplify and disregard the infinite complexity of nature. Often, investigating minute biochemical parts of food and trying to reach broad conclusions about diet and health lead to contradictory results. Contradictory results lead to confused scientists and policy makers, and to an increasingly confused public...This is not health. I am appealing to your intelligence, not to your ability to follow a recipe or menu plan. I want to offer you a more profound and more beneficial way to view health. I have a prescription for maximum health that is simple, easy to follow and offers more benefits than any drug or surgery, without any of the side effects...Most importantly, the supporting evidence is overwhelming. This is about changing the way you eat and live and the extraordinary health that will result. So, what is my prescription for good health? In short, it is about the multiple health benefits of consuming plant-based foods, and the largely unappreciated health dangers of consuming animal-based foods, including all types of meat, dairy, and eggs."

pg22: "I have come to see that the benefits produced by eating a plant-based diet are far more diverse and impressive than any drug or surgery used in medical practice. Heart diseases, cancers, diabetes, stroke and hypertension, arthritis, cataracts, Alzheimer's disease, impotence and all sorts of chronic diseases can be largely prevented. These diseases, which generally occur with aging and tissue degeneration, kill the majority of us before our time. Additionally, impressive evidence now exists to show that advanced cancers of certain types, diabetes and a few other degenerative diseases can be reversed by diet...One of the more exciting benefits of good nutrition is the prevention of diseases that are thought to be due to genetic predisposition. We now know that we can largely avoid these "genetic" diseases..."

It's hard for me to find good hard scientific information when it comes to nutrition these days. It too often seems like it's all tied up in hogwash and fads. So I really appreciated this careful review of empirical evidence and explanations of how specific diseases work and their interaction with the food we put in our bodies. Even though I was already biased toward a whole foods plant based diet, I had no idea how truly healthy it actually is. I really hope everyone I care about gets a chance to read this.
