Another great classic by Beaton, I find this series comforting in its homeliness yet exciting in its mysteriousness. I did find the scene set by the first chapter a little at odds with the rest of the book though, I struggle to truly see the link.

Author started to get preachy about how women should behave and women's lib has ruined everything. Oh please....prude much? Tired of Agatha falling in love with every man she meets. I guess 12 books in and I'm sick of Agatha feeling sorry for herself. Glad the TV series made Agatha, Roy and the vicars wife much more likable characters.

Agatha has morphed into the ultimate Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss Icon in this one.

So, the mystery was kind of rubbish and nonsense, but I liked the turn Agatha seemed to take in this one. Time will tell if any of it sticks, but she seemed to do a fair bit of growing up, even if her primary form of exercise comes from leaping to conclusions.

4 out of 5 stars.
