One of my new favorite non-fiction novels. It was an intelligent, fascinating, page turner.

The first quarter or so of the book went on for far too long and needed serious editing. But once the ship set sail it was a lot more interesting!

This is a great book. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the first hundred pages should have been condensed into about 40 pages. Once you get to the actual expedition, it is fascinating.

Much more accessible than Blood and Thunder, Sides takes full advantage of the journals recovered from the captain and crew to give a personal outlook on their harrowing journey over the ice. Books like these put one in awe of the human spirit.
