this book was really lovely. when I worked at a bookstore, we were always asked for recommendations for "lighthearted easy reads" which was always kind of a difficult request, but this book fulfills it! it's a very sweet story that isn't about any one thing, besides the relationship between this mother and her daughters, layered over their independent relationships with their distinct worlds. I really enjoy Shange's writing style, I like the way she plays with the English language and the way she formats her writing. she's very poetic, which I loved at times and at other times I wish the writing had been a bit more direct. overall I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for ease & comfort in a book.

This book was different but delightful. Based in reality but with some mysticism and maybe magic as we experience the lives of these three sisters. Definitely worth the read.

a beautiful literally work that feels like it transcends the word book? It was honestly hard for me to truly understand in some ways, but the way that she blended poetry and prose was incredibly beautiful! I want to come back and read it again in a few months to understand more.

Southern African-American woman writing at its best! Gullah culture, voodoo, home remedies, and recipes all bound up in a beautiful novel about 3 sisters.

Very uniquely written. I didn't know much about the author, but after looking her up, I am not surprised that she is also a playwright and a poet. Follows the stories of 3 "colored" sisters who all have a bit of magic surrounding them. The magic presents itself through creativity. Namely weaving, dancing, and music.
