This book is so misogynist. I get why this dystopia is iconic but like. There's been a lot better since.

The novel purports to be a fictionalisation of the socialism prevalent in Europe prior to 1991. Taking place in England under the totalitarian ideology of IngSoc -English Socialism- the thought police control everyone's actions and the language and history are rewritten to support the narrative of "Big Brother."

The problem is the story read much more like a description of the modern day Capitalist West, than of any socialist country that's every been around. The thought police live among us in the form of the NSA, FBI, CIA, ICE, the Police, and the Corporations like Amazon, Google, and Facebook... Endless war is tactic of Washington to promote a continuous War Economy, and at every turn the socialist nations have opposed it.

It's not a bad book once you realise the author's anti-communism prevented him from seeing who the real enemy was.

It would be a less depressing read if it weren't such an accurate description of reality.
