I'm writing a study guide on this for Year 12 students so I've been rereading it and writing extensive notes. There's no shortage of things to say: it's a rich and deservedly influential book and significantly better as a novel than Huxley's Brave New World, with which it's often compared. It's not perfect, though. I don't know what Orwell was thinking with the extremely long extracts from Goldstein's supposed book. It tells us nothing we couldn't infer already and slows down the story at just the wrong moment.

Mixed feelings so won’t rate. I feel like I didn’t grasp the entirety of everything present in this world. This doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. I did. I just think 1984 is not a book you read once in your life! So I’ll def be rereading this!

Razor-like insights that still apply in the world today. What Orwell wrote down was brought to reality in a even more bleak and cruel way in Soviet Union and China.
