Kiva Meridan leads a perilous existence as a healer in the most dangerous prison in several kingdoms. A prisoner herself, Kiva does her best to make her fellow inmates more comfortable in a place with a 100% death rate. Then the Rebel Queen arrives, inches from death, with a note: “don’t let her die.” Taking the Queen’s punishment as her own, Kiva tries to stay alive through the Trial by Ordeal. Almost no one survives. But if Kiva can do it, she’ll win the Queen’s freedom - and her own.
This is easily the best fantasy book I’ve read in awhile. Well-paced, with characters you care about (even if they are in prison for killing a bunch of people). I’m hoping the rest of the series is this good.
