Wow!!! Absolutely love love loved this. So completely immersive and I was fully in it from the get go. I loved the writing style, and the third person narrative with Kira’s POV. The characters are so complex and so interesting! Obsessed with the way that Lynette Noni reveals information and backstory to characters. And WHAT an ENDING! I loved the way the magic system was being revealed and the histories of the kingdom and the rebels, and how everything explained itself slowly but surely. Devoured this and completely loved it, it’s right up my street! Starting the next one immediately.

This was by far one of the best opening books to a fantasy series I have ever read. The jaw dropping twists, well thought out characters, and intense plot (including trials) made this book one of the best. I seriously had to force myself to not pick up book two right away (bc I am reading this with a book club and cannot binge read the whole series). Also this book put me through every emotion, but wow def recommend.

Kiva Meridan is a healer in a notorious prison called Zalindov, where you trust no one except yourself, and the hope in messages from her family that they will come for her means she must stay alive. Keep the Rebel Queen alive until a new prisoner arrives at the infirmary and a new message.

However, the Rebel Queen has been sentenced to death in four trials that are meant to be for the most dangerous prisoners. Survive all four, and the prisoner will be set free. Kiva knows that the Rebel Queen cannot survive one Trial, let alone all four Trials, so Kiva volunteers herself to take her place, but the only problem is that no one has ever survived.

The prison is a dark and terrifying place for a Ten-year-old when Kiva first arrived, and having to survive after her father passed away, a year into her stay. And surviving for seven years, only because she is a healer that she has been able to avoid most of the violence that happens all around her.

And the prison guards are terrifying since they do whatever they want, until a new female prison guard starts watching over Kiva. The new Guard, Naari, seems to be unlike the others, who like violence and debauchery with the female prisoners, and Kiva notices that Naari helps keep Kiva safe. But among Kiva's thoughts are how to keep the Rebel Queen alive, survive the trials to keep herself and Tipp alive, and get back to her family.

I have seen people rate this book highly, and I didn't really understand how, until I started reading the book and wanting to see how Kiva survives the trials or to see what is killing off the other prisoners. The start is a little slow, but it is needed for the world building, but once you get to the first of the trials, you will like Kiva, Tipp and Jaren. Is the book worthwhile for me? it is a yes, and if I could mark it higher than five stars, then I would.
