This was one of the best young adult novels I've read in a while! It was a little more mature which really worked for me and was pretty much essential given the setting. I thought the prison setting and all the darkness that came with that was well written and I was intrigued from the very beginning.
In particular, I think the stakes in this story were handled perfectly. They were high, directly connected to the characters' goals, and while there were a few unconnected plot lines going on, they all affected each other in really significant ways and then came together in the end in a really satisfying way. The whole way through, I was excited to read the next chapter and find out how Kiva got through her next obstacle.
The twists in this novel blew my MIND. They made so much sense and I couldn't believe I didn't guess them EXCEPT for that one at the very end. Maybe it's just me but it felt completely out of nowhere and just slapped on for fun at the end. Idk. It didn't ruin anything though and definitely got me excited for the next book (although it's suddenly out on loan at my library after sitting there waiting for me for WEEKS. I'm so mad).
A couple of things that did bother me: that fricking note that she kept repeating in italics, sometimes multiple times in one chapter. Like oh my god, shut up, we get it. Also, Tipp's stutter. I feel like there are better ways to write a character with a stutter without making their dialogue distracting and hard to read, particularly because t-t-t-this is n-n-n-ot how people w-w-w-with stutters say every sentence ever. It fluctuates depending on a range of factors and does not exclusively affect the first consonant of every few words. I don't personally have a stutter, but surely everyone knows these things?
Overall, still a really enjoyable and well-paced read. I wouldn't read this just for the romance, while well written and integrated with the main plot, the focus is very much elsewhere.

There wasn’t much wrong with this one I just wasn’t in the mood for it. A little boring and predictable plot so far. I’ll maybe try again later.

Wow!!! Absolutely love love loved this. So completely immersive and I was fully in it from the get go. I loved the writing style, and the third person narrative with Kira’s POV. The characters are so complex and so interesting! Obsessed with the way that Lynette Noni reveals information and backstory to characters. And WHAT an ENDING! I loved the way the magic system was being revealed and the histories of the kingdom and the rebels, and how everything explained itself slowly but surely. Devoured this and completely loved it, it’s right up my street! Starting the next one immediately.
This was by far one of the best opening books to a fantasy series I have ever read. The jaw dropping twists, well thought out characters, and intense plot (including trials) made this book one of the best. I seriously had to force myself to not pick up book two right away (bc I am reading this with a book club and cannot binge read the whole series). Also this book put me through every emotion, but wow def recommend.
