one big plot twist does not a good book make...
With that being said, I think overall I enjoyed this book. It was kind of boring for like 60% of it and things kind of dragged on for a long time. But yeah... when things started ramping up, it got good. I wish I had read this without seeing a few of the Goodreads reviews (none with spoilers obviously) saying how good the plot twist was. So I knew there was a plot twist going into this.
I predicted a few aspects of the plot twist, but that's because I was looking for it so I knew to spot things. I knew Jaren was royalty, because of a few different things: the way he talked to the guards (Naari specifically) without being reprimanded, the way he was SO against the rebels and their cause, and the way he had very little general knowledge/common sense in different parts of the book. Also, when Kiva met Prince Deverick (but we end up finding out Jaren is Prince Deverick and the "prince" Kiva meets is Jaren's cousin posing as him) she mentions that she would never like a prince. Obviously, immediately I was like yeah this will be funny callback that people will only notice in rereads, that Kiva actually did end up liking a prince, she just didn't realize it at the time. So I saw that coming from a mile away.
I also predicted that Kiva would end up being in Torvin's bloodline. There was some emphasis on the fact that Sarana and Torvin were married, but it was mentioned that never had any children of their own together. So I figured Kiva would end up being on the opposite side from Jaren (but that they obviously are not related by any means omfg), because I had already pieced together than Jaren was a royal, and a descendant of Sarana (the royal bloodline currently in power). I thought that Kiva would end up having powers, and figured this was an unreliable narrator situation where the reader wouldn't find out until later on that Kiva had been hiding something from us. I should've connected the dots a little bit further to figure out that Tilda was Kiva's mother. But that never occurred to me at all. So that twist had me SHOCKED.. MY JAW DROPPED.. So this book gets a few points in my book because, yeah, that last plot twist was really cool and I wasn't expecting it. But does it make up for the majority of the book being boring and dragging along? No.
