Learned a lot from this one, and my 7-year old son learned a lot about both Grace Hopper and the history of computer programming. Excellent addition to school libraries and women's history collections.
This is a kids' book I bought for a child I know. I think she'll relate to Grace Hopper's drive to figure things out, and I hope it will encourage and inspire her. Even though it's a picture book, the vocabulary is for an older kid (the inside of the book says age 8), and there's a little more text than in a typical picture book. The pictures and text are engaging.
Excellent Narrative Nonfiction to share with older students. Recommended for 4th & 5th grade
Interesting biography, but did not feel has compelling has some I have read. Just felt kind of - there!
A delightful picture book biography of Grace Hopper. Very accessible for young children and a great characterization of Hopper's determination and humor. Plus I learned the origin of the term "computer bug."
Love this book. What an amazing woman! Discover where the term "bug" entered computer programming and what is possible when you are determined and intelligent. I need to read more about Grace Hopper.
Ben is now fascinated by Grace Hopper because of this book. We reviewed binary coding because of this story, and he loved hearing about how the term "bugs" was invented in relation to computer coding. I think this was especially true because his father codes software for a living, so this helped him understand what his dad does better. Great illustrations, use of quotes from her life, and a nice, in depth story that was still appropriate for kids.
A little slow moving for very young children, but worthwhile for 5 and ups.
