I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters and this world!
.
Aside from some pacing issues a little over the halfway point and one character arc conclusion, this was an epic end to this quartet.
.
Just like in the other books, we are thrown about a world at war - seeing it through multiple POVs. All of the characters are so different than they were from the start. The purposeful prose forces us feel the weight of what they’ve been through, of the choices they’ve made and how it has changed them. We mourn who they used to be but chase who they are becoming.
.
This was one of those books that even though I was not happy about the fate of some of the characters, I couldn’t imagine it any other way. And this is its own special kind of heartbreak.
.
I love when a villain is not one dimensional. One that’s not evil just for the sake of being evil. And this last book packed a punch in delivering the devastation of the history of The Nightbringer.
.
Stopping here to keep things spoiler free but I will probably do a separate post on the series in its entirety but I begggg you, if you enjoy fantasy and found family please read these. They are criminally underhyped.

literally just such a perfect ending to a great series. i’m obsessed with the characters, i feel so so deeply for each of them & their futures in this world. wouldn’t change a thing about this ending besides maybe giving us Darin back . baby Zacharias is the cutest character ever & everything just. made. sense. Helene ends up being the Empress, the sole heir being Zacharias. Livvy murdered by Keris made Helene’s revenge sooo much stronger. Mirra (Laia’s mom) “dies” but she doesn’t actually.. Keris’ spies never check her body & she stays in hiding until she finally kills Keris. Nightbringer is killed by Laia, which unleashes the Sea of Suffering, killing everyone. Laia goes into the Sea to tell Nightbringer to call it quits. Rhemat is the Nightbringers wife that left him, and she ends up speaking to him through Laia & he stands down. I looooved Rhemat/Mercy as a character. Mirra takes Elias’ spot as the Soul Catcher and he becomes a teacher, Laia is the new Kehanni/dtoru teller (again.. just makes sense), and the world continues. loved loved this ending to a beautiful series!

idk why it took me so long to read this book because i loved the first three so much. the beginning was a bit slow i think but stars, seeing the way everything came together was amazing. i could not stop crying through the last maybe quarter of the book and i wish id read this sooner so i could buy the original covers. i highlighted so much throughout this book and i don’t even know if it’ll all fit in my notebook. 10/10 would read again (but i have to wait a few years so it’s like im reading it for the first time again)
