The last 200 pages of the book had me sobbing endlessly. Bitter sweet.
i really didn't expect for another fantasy series to grip me like this one did. it's been a long time since i've felt like i was a part of the world that i was reading about, and the ember series 100% did it for me. i'm so sad that it's over.
laia and elias: their love story is something that i'll remember forever. the way they loved each other so passionately, even when everything in their life told them not to - even when elias is the soul catcher, even when he can't remember, she's still there. something about it was so beautifully painful that made me yearn for more and more of them. i'm so unbelievably happy that they got their happy ending. i wouldn't wish for anything more, and for awhile, i really thought that elias was taken by the sea forever.
helene and harper: not only did st make me fall in love with one hetero couple, but two? how do these authors do it? their slow burn romance had me flipping the pages, hoping helene would finally say those three words. hoping she would finally just admit her damn feelings and kiss that man. it's bittersweet, though, because we lost him - but he changed her forever. and i think in order for helene to be the woman she's going to be, it had to happen.
just random thoughts about the book in general:
1. COOK!!! KILLING KERIS AND BECOMING SOUL CATCHER. i couldn't be happier with this choice
2. poor sweet livia dying.. i had to put down the book because i started sobbing which was honestly unexpected of me lmao
3. my heart is broken because everything that happened, happened for darin. and in the end, he died. how fucking poetic and tragic is that?
4. the war??? THE WAR??? so fucking good. so bloody. so violent. there was a part that described helene as "lobbing off several heads" and i just imagined the blood spurting all over her and how badass she looked and i... god... she's so fucking cool
i love laia. i love helene. i love elias. and i fucking loved this series.
sidenote to my sidenotes: did anyone else cry at the end when the POV finally read elias/helene instead of soul catcher/blood shrike? because bitch! i did!
thank you st for this series. thank you.

The way this final installment gutted me and made me plead at the sky for there to be one more book, or even just one more chapter! Again, some of the best fantasy world building, character development, plot twists– all of it– that I have ever read. Would read Sabaa's grocery lists. Can't get enough of her work, so excited for what is to come!

This was a really good series, but I don't think it needed to be 4 books. I think 3 would've been fine. Still, interesting characters with an interesting story! But it was too long as a whole for me.
