Constant twist and jaw dropping hooks. I fell in love with Lucy and everything she did for Clay. Without spoiling I’ll admit Epstein didn’t kill himself.
This also gets a .5 star bump for the puppers!

The thriller part, though sometimes rather predictable, isn't bad. The author manages to reel you in quite easily with her writing style.

What turned me away from this book were the very white tropes and clichés every white author seems to write these days.
The Harry Potter references in 2023, making it clear this author is most likely not a safe person for readers like me.
The she's not like anyone else trope because the fmc has a special eyesight which makes her such a good shot. It added nothing of value to the story or the fmc.
The inappropriate relationship between the fmc and her stepbrother.
Also not a huge fan of a white author referencing historical sites (Indian Mounds) and events (the Alamo) without any hint of cultural sensitivity.

This was initially really good but the pacing of part 2 and the <inappropriate step-sibling relationship/> really threw me off and took me out of the book. I was really into it but once I finished the first part, I was just no longer into it. The constant cultural references also were  little bit corny to me.

The emotional punch this book packs was insane. I don’t know if it was my heightened emotional state at time of reading or what, but probably due to the intense writing. This book had me sobbing!

Eight years ago, Lucy lost her little brother. While her heroics were enough to save many others, she couldn’t save him and she lives with that pain. Now, when her stepbrother is missing in the same area that happened years ago.

Deaths and missing persons are shocking this small community and she cannot help but think it is all connected. When her ex-boyfriend is pinned for murder, Lucy knows she needs answers.

This book spans years of tireless effort, dark town secrets, greed and loss and each moment had me HOOKED. Lucy was so strong, never wavering and always pushing for the truth, even if she didn’t like the outcome. What a fantastic read!

This was such a great read, loved the mystery and the emotions, it was so good to read!

Lucy is no stranger to grief and loss. When she was a child, her little brother and multiple boy scouts were killed when the LaRue Dam broke. Now, 10 years later, Lucy's stepbrother is missing along with the Sheriff's son and Lucy's ex-boyfriend's sister. When the bodies start to pile up, Lucy finds herself in the middle of a mystery that threatens to take her own life if she gets too close to the truth.

I am absolutely in the minority with a low rating for this book. The book SLAMS into the plot with no real character introduction, and I just found the characters too convoluted! I couldn't keep up with nicknames and how everyone related to one another, and that could be my own fault, I suppose. I should say I listened to the audiobook so I was unable to use the Kindle skeleton feature to go back and figure out who the different characters were.

Thank you to NetGalley and and the author for and audiobook ARC in exchange for my honest review.

WOW! I did not see those last couple of twists coming! I was SURE it was her stepdad! This was a great read and had me glued to my phone while listening! This was my 1st book by Court Stevens but will not be my last, as I am adding all their books to my TBR!
