adventurous dark mysterious slow-paced

a good book. I thought it was slow at times, but other then that, it was good.

From the very beginning, this book had me hooked.

The short chapters filled with emotion kept me from pausing the audiobook for a single minute, waiting at the edge of my seat for the next clue and the one after that. I probably changed my mind a thousand times, trying to guess what exactly happened, and I don’t think I would’ve ever guessed correctly until just before the big reveal. Even the epilogue, the happy ending, broke my heart a little.

Probably my favorite mystery/thriller I read in the past few months.

It was a decent storyline and mystery but it was slightly boring and predictable. I’ve read so many thrillers that it really has to grab me to make an impression and this one was forgettable. It was a good book but nothing I’m raving about.

I received a copy of this book as a gift.
"Last Girl Breathing" is a mystery that follows Lucy Michaels. When Lucy was younger, there was a terrible flood that resulted in the death of her younger brother. She tried to save him, but could not, and she has grappled with the guilt of that ever since. Now, in the present, there has been a murder that seems to be somehow linked to the flood of the past, and Lucy will have to revisit what went wrong all those years ago.
This was a great small-town mystery that was rife with corruption and intrigue. I really enjoyed reading from Lucy's perspective because she was so close to the case, but she really tried to remain objective. She is also only a teenager, so her investigating was off the cuff, and felt more "fun" to read about.
Every time I thought I had it all figured out, there was a new layer to the mystery added, or the book took a turn that I was not expecting. The ultimate reveal did not have as big of a punch for me because I think I was suffering from whiplash from all of the twists previously. However, I was ultimately satisfied with the ending, except for one death I desperately wish I could rectify.
This was my first book from Court Stevens, and I am intrigued to pick up more in the future.

Eight years have passed since a broken dam caused a flood that swept away Lucy's younger brother. Now tragedy strikes again when her stepbrother disappears and ends up dead a few days later. This sets Lucy on a path to find out if the events are related and to find out the truth behind it all.

The novel does a great job of capturing the complex family dynamics that follow such tragedy. I liked how strong Lucy was under these circumstances and how she was a rock to her mother. The number of characters in the story was so large, but everyone was well-developed, and Court Stevens wrote them so intricately woven together, that it was difficult for me to determine who was responsible for what.

I found this plot to be quite original, but part two ruined the suspense somehow, and the time jump in part three pulled me out of the narrative a little. All in all, I thought this book was OK and despite its sadness and heartbreak, I was intrigued enough to finish reading it. But I think it's a hard one to rate, as it is not a pleasant reading experience.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook arc in exchange for an honest review.

I was excited for this book because I thought the setting was interesting and I love a good thriller, but I found it lacking. The plot felt a bit all over the place. I did like that the story wasn't totally predictable, which is a problem I find in a lot of thriller/mysteries, but I didn't love this as much as I was hoping.

Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.

I requested a Netgalley digital arc of Last Girl Breathing by Court Stevens after loving Dress Codes for Small Towns and enjoying The June Boys.
