I was into this book for a long time but then it really started dragging.

I generally read WWII historical fiction and this year I wanted to branch out. So this is the first I've read of this era or about slavery in general.

The story as a whole was fantastic. I loved the idea of a slave running away and finding out where all her kids are. I feel like that's something that's very realistic. I also loved a lot of the people she met along the way.

This was a great debut! Emotional at times and I actually teared up some. I can't wait to see what Shearer comes out right next!

Very fascinating and captivating read. I loved being a part of Rachel's adventure for her lost children as well as her journey to find herself outside of the restraints of slavery.

Pretty heavy book with shit load of history but also for some reason physics?

The books flowery language was okay at best but I hoped the author would let the reader see these emotions not get told
Oh and also the plot? How the fuck did Rachel find her children that easily like the most messy part of the book was mercy and cherry Jane arc aka Trinidad where everything felt rushed a bit too rushed even the ending felt a bit shit? Where's the big reunion that's what we wanted, but anyway the books tone was done really well and the character were okay at best they had no character development at all even nobody who really was a nobody at the end
Not the biggest fan of this book for how boring the ending parts got so ye.
