What an excellent read. The book feels like a true cross-section of the contributors of the Moth events. And Catherine Burns has done a marvellous job as editor, by allowing each speaker's voice to shine off the page.

A book of transcripts of talks is a brave project, and has worked tremendously well.

The Moth is a collection of 50 interesting short true stories. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys short stories. Stories from writers, musicians, directors, scientists, doctors, astronauts, poker players, prisoners and many more.

This is a list of some of the people who told their stories in the book. I would recommend against searching the names as it might ruin some of the stories that you will read.

I enjoyed reading this, but it's like a 'best of' version of the podcast, which is already a 'best of' version of The Moth, so I had already heard 75% of them.

Stunning glimpses into the lives of others that take your breath away. I could only read two or three of these short accounts at a time because they are so intense and real. Each one is like a little movie that transports you somewhere else. Makes me want to go find the MOTH phenomenon on radio, YouTube etc. Amazing.

I'm not much a fan of short stories or non-fiction, but I loved this - snapshots of real lives. sometimes felt a little "over-edited" for effect, but each tale is utterly engaging and each voice is unique.

Wow. I've always been interested in people's life stories. People watching. That sort of thing, it's fascinating to me.

There are stories of all kinds, such as the doctor who was sent out to save Mother Teresa's life, A priest breaking down in the neighbourhood and retelling the story of Jesus on Easter Sunday (who had never heard this tale) and then turning up at his church the next day to hear it again. A person's tale of NASA, War, depression, someone trying to work with the Yankee's and many more. They all fascinated me because they were all brutally honest about what had happened. I figured I would like this book because I like Slam Poetry so much, and this is a similar concept but in stories.

I read it in under a month and I found myself wanting to take my time with this, reading a story or two before I go to bed or reading it to calm myself in situations. It really was an excellent read and I highly recommend it.

The Moth is a collection of 50 true stories as told live in THE MOTH spoken word storytelling events. The prose captures much of the authenticity of the live storytelling, so you get a real sense of performance and, with the best stories, honesty.

Of course, there are a few moments of saccharinity and sometimes smugness, but there's also plenty of humour, poignancy and surprises. And those few gems make it worth the read.
