I really liked All the Light We Cannot See, and had high hopes for this one. But I felt, often, as though I was reading a very well-written children's book. Many of the main characters are children (or old men), but that's not why. It is a relentlessly upbeat book, which is actually welcome these days, but it repeatedly underlines its rather obvious messages in short meaningful comments of the sort that remind me of Sunday School stories. Sigh. Anyway, my favorite character was Rex Browning, the translator of ancient texts, and his discussions of what it means to translate and of the lost classical masterpieces.

Think of me as a curmudgeon. Many people are going to love this book, and you may well be one of them.
