Meh. We listened to 2/3 of the audiobook and gave up. Too much laughing in the story and not enough by us. It also had a convoluted, slow plot. In other words, BORING!!! Sorry to those who loved it.

This was my boyfriend's favorite book from childhood, and I've been swearing I would read it for years. Now I finally have! The book was silly and sweet, just like him. I feel like it explains a lot about his sense of humor.

This didn't do it for me - maybe I am just running low on child-like whimsy, but I felt like Feiffer didn't deliver on the subversion he seemed to be playing with. He'd break the fourth wall, but not to any great effect. He'd poke fun of fairy-tale tropes, but then simply recreate them. I can totally understand how it's a favorite of those who read it in childhood, but it fell flat for me as a grown-up.

3.5 stars. Before Lady Sadie showed up I thought that I liked the way the author broke the fourth wall, so to speak, and used illustrations to tell the story, but that the king and Roger were both annoying. After she arrives the fun with quest tropes begins, and the story really picks up.

Had this as an audiobook while we went on vacation, it was okay.

This was utterly charming, silly, ridiculous, and all sorts of fun. I very much enjoyed the breaking of the fourth wall and all the meta (the reference to [b:The Phantom Tollbooth|378|The Phantom Tollbooth|Norton Juster|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1320476717s/378.jpg|1782584] was particularly entertaining), and the illustrations were fabulous.

One of the most enchanting, moving, beautiful things I've ever read.
