Overall, I LOVED this book and I can't wait to read more in the series! Rory is so relatable and charming, I love watching her journey of embracing herself. It is a journey I wish I could've taken in high school like she did. As with any anti-weight stigma literature, there were a few times I wanted it to go further. For example, while there was a ton of pro-curves and anti-diet prose, Rory still ended up on some sort of dieting/"healthy eating" plan, a "diet plan my mom and I both could agree on." For more info on why I wish the book was a little more vocal about challenging the concept of "healthy eating" and weight loss, read Anti-Diet and The Wellness Trap by Christy Harrison. I also wish the cover had a truly fat girl on it, not just a (debatably) curvy girl. Rory herself says she is 1X which is still more in the small-fat category (although later she says she could lose the whole weight of the quarterback so I don't know). To learn more about why size diversity even within the fat community is important (representation for superfat and infinifat people, not just small and midfat, which is a form of sizeism), check out What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat and "You Just Need To Lose Weight" by Aubrey Gordon.
I want to really reiterate that Kelsey's debut Curvy Girls Can't book is phenomenal and goes so hard for the curvy girls! I hope the rest of the series goes even further, even harder! Because liberation is about dismantling, and unabashed joy in the face of oppression. There's always further to go! I speak from a place of self-challenge as well as I'm a writer working on a research dissertation. I am constantly challenged to make sure I am pushing the process of liberation as far as I can, finding the most marginalized intersections of fatness and sizeism and bringing them into the light.
Okay, gotta head off to read Book #2! 🤩

This book was cute and sweet. Relatable which is refreshing to see. I did not appreciate the third act breakup. It’s not something I ever enjoy.

This book was sweet. But the mother! Uggh! Made me bawl. And not in a good way.
