Hochschild lays out in detail the history first of the shady dealings King Leopold II used to become Suzerain of the Congo Free state and then the horrific abuses carried out there. It is made abundantly clear that from the beginning Leopold intended to extract every cent possible from the Congo with no regard to the human suffering it would cause. Slavery, mutilation, mass rape and approximately 10 million dead.
Hochschild also focuses on the efforts to expose these atrocities from figures such as George Washington Williams, William Henry Shepard, Roger Casement & ED Morel, and on the mixed legacy of those efforts.

It was harrowing, as expected, but not without stories of courage and defiance. It had been in my to-read pile for ages and I'm very glad I've read it, it's a history that deserves to be known and remembered especially because of how hard people want to forget
