It’s a pleasant enough sci-fi romance, and I was still given all that I was promised. The quality of those aspects was a little more miss for me. I was surprised that they fell in love so fast (especially Aisha)- it didn’t feel that removed from a typical allosexual romance arc. Still, everyone’s identities are accepted by the main cast, sometimes the world, with some introductory information shared for the reader. Aisha is also described as asexual early on. Mostly, I was intrigued by a few things that did not end up with that much attention. The tran insectoids (and revival!) as well as the dragons are actually really fascinating to me. I also appreciated seeing art spread throughout an adult book, but the darkness and blurriness was a little disappointing compared to the cover.

Drowning in medical debt, Tai is given an offer they cannot refuse: seduce Aisha Malik. The money could completely free Tai of all medical debt that they are struggling under. Aisha Malik is a career-focused woman set on remaining focused on her work and not love life. But when a heist goes wrong, the pair are thrown together on the run from the authorities. As their adventures evolve, so do their feelings for one another. The one thing that threatens to ruin it all is the reward money Tai could earn.

A quick and lovely read, Adrift in Starlight is a heartwarming found family that has wonderful and diverse representation. The romance does not overshadow the worldbuilding or plot, and the scifi aspects are not too convoluted or complex to understand.

When set adrift in the universe, some things are worth holding onto.

Titan Valentino has been offered a job they can’t refuse.

Tai, a gender-neutral courtesan, receives a scandalous proposition: seduce an actor's virgin fiancée. The money is enough to pay off Tai’s crushing medical debt, a tantalizing prospect.

Too bad Aisha Malik isn’t the easy target they expect.

A standoffish historian who hates to be touched, she’s laser-focused on her career, and completely unaware that her marriage has been arranged behind her back. This could be the one instance where Tai’s charm and charisma fail them.

Then an accidental heist throws them together as partners in crime.

Fleeing from the Authorities, they’re dragged into one adventure after another: alien planets, pirate duels, and narrow escapes from the law. As Tai and Aisha open up to each other, deeper feelings kindle between them. But that reward money still hangs over Tai’s head. Telling Aisha the truth could ruin everything…

Their freedom, their career, and their blossoming love all hang in the balance. To save one might mean sacrificing the rest.

This was a really fun story, I loved all the diversity that was in it.
It was good although a bit weird at times, but it was worth it overall.

Readers who loved the Lunar Chronicles will enjoy this read. This story gave me the same kind of feel. A rag-tag group of strangers/semi-strangers, on the run to right a wrong, cybernetic enhancements, space travel, and unlikely friends. I love the LGTBQ+ representation within the characters. They are all so multi-dimensional and evolve over the course of the book. I can't wait to see what Mindi Briar comes out with next!

A ragtag band of people accidentally embark on an intergalactic heist...

Many thanks to Owl City Press and NetGalley for the arc of this book!

With canonical queer characters such as asexual and genderqueer MCs, as well as non-traditional relationships, I really enjoyed the fact that they weren't just relegated to the sidelines and were three-dimensional, beautifully-written characters. This was an uncomplicated and easy read, although it did read more like a YA than adult sci-fi to me.

The fast-paced action and humour interjected into the interactions of the characters from the beginning also felt well-suited for the book! Though I wish the book had gone on for a bit longer, as the ending felt a bit rushed to me, with the resolution coming on a little too quickly.

Overall, I would recommend this as a light, fun, space travel story with effective and clear-cut worldbuilding.
