A lovely book! Carefully researched, and the narration is beautifully wrought. I love how it builds on the themes of the original Frankenstein: being outcasted and monstrous, the delights and beauties of science, as well as its horrors, colonialism and racism, the rights of women and the subjugation they're subjected to in society.

While tense and dark, it's also a tale of hope, that makes space for the complicated sentiments of ambition, rage, and love in its main characters. Do check the content warnings.

Absolutely phenomenal! I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did but I am smitten! As someone who has always loved monsters and found beauty in the horrible things of the world I relate to Mary quite a bit. Always wondering what was wrong with me, and finding the answer to be what does it matter? I loved this message, that yes you can be horrible. you can be prideful and have a temper. you can be ugly, uncanny, strange, and all the other ways of being "unnatural" and not ignoring it or claiming you're not but owning it and deciding that you still deserve your happiness. why should being ugly make you unworthy of being loved? when is a monster no longer a monster? when you love it. that doesn't actually stop it from being a monster to anyone but you but what does anyone else matter? as for the story itself, I thought it was incredibly well done. good pacing, complex characters, unbelievably realistic setting. it ebbed and flowed naturally and was unexpected enough that I didn't immediately guess what would happen but was still satisfying. I definitely recommend this read!
