Good book! Mary is delightfully complex and her husband delightfully not so! Women are at the forefront of this novel set in a time where they were very much not to be, and purposefully excluded from being so. I wasn’t super surprised by any of the plot twists, was able to see each coming, but that isn’t always a bad thing. Any queerness in the book is wonderfully weaved amongst the story, without formal announcement. Was it my favorite book ever? No. Was I quite entertained, is it well written, and did I thoroughly enjoy it? Absolutely!

I absolutely loved the concept behind this book, but ultimately found it dragging more often than not. It feels like the pacing purposely meant to mimic that of Frankenstein, and not more contemporary novels, and I appreciate that creative endeavor, but when I am reluctantly picking up a book just to finish it, that's when I know they've lost me. Endless scientific debates and musings, with a very glossed over description of the actual creature they're creating, and the feminist and classist issues of its time beaten to death in their repetition. Plus the queer romance is but a tiiiiiny portion of the story. I won't be quickly recommending this one. But I adore the cover art!

it was gay… it was frankenstein… the shitty men got what they deserved… what more could you ask for

To say i loved it is quite the understatement.
I loved its excellent pacing, its dialogue with Shelley's Frankenstein, and of course its adresse to the reader : what is a monster and, when it's a woman, why is she monstruous ?

Gothic vibes all around, and punchy dialogues aplenty. Excellent for fans of Kingfisher, Kuang, Parker-Chan and, of course, Mary Shelley.
