I loved this book! Frankenstein, Scotland, 1750s, dinosaurs, feminism, science, and gay romance. What more could you want! Just ordered the PB to go along w/ the audio!
I adored the author’s afterward. Don’t skip it!

Thanks to this book, my boyfriend will have to deal with me being mad about the patriarchy for approximately three hours tonight, as opposed to the normal one.

I really enjoyed the narrative voice and writing of this novel, and I enjoyed the main character.
I think you're setting yourself up for a difficult task as an author when you endeavor to expand on a beloved classic, as you're automatically setting yourself up to comparison.
I enjoyed the discussion of monstrosity, though it was a relatively small part of the book, but I thought that part was interesting in comparison to Frankenstein.
In my opinion, where Frankenstein excels the most is it's societal commentary, it has a lot to say and it does it well and beautifully. And, well the commentary in Our Hideous Progeny is well done, it doesn't have much new to say.
I would've liked more from the queer storyline, but that is a personal opinion. Just, if you're looking for a queer story, note that it is not the main focus in this one. (It is still a queer story and that aspect is written well, it's just not talked about very often in comparison to other aspects of the novel)
Anyways, there was a lot to like about this novel. It is well-written and interesting, and I would recommend it.

Frankenstein but with fossils, I loved this as much as I hoped to!! Compellingly written with a lot of gothic suspense, an adventurous plot, and a nuanced female protagonist who questions the misogyny of Victorian society & scientific circles. Mary is such a ferocious, intelligent, admirable woman who refuses to diminish herself or belittle her academic contributions, and I loved her growth and her subtle but essential queerness. Similarly, McGill explores topics like racism, chronic illness, and stillbirth with real sensitivity. Overall as a history of science nerd, loved all the palaeontology and anatomical research in this!
