This was an interesting reader... Though directed at a K-2nd grade audience, it was actually about a kid who literally doesn't listen to his mom's wishes for him to stay safe at home and goes out and fights (with a gun) the British during the American Revolution. It's hard to say exactly how old Sam is but I guessed that maybe he was about 10, making him possibly twice as old as the reader. Honestly, I don't think I've ever read a kids book directed at kids this young that has kids literally fighting battles, watching their friend get shot, and watching people die. I mean, the pictures don't go into gory details, I think I was just a little surprised. Perhaps the age of this book is showing?

Don't get me wrong, I think that there are some kids out there who will just love it, but it's one I'd be really, really cautious about recommending to parents.
