Dubus is a master of short fiction, and having the opportunity to see his works collected together in this edition was extremely satisfying. His writing cuts to the quick of human fallibility - it's heavy on darkness, but also love. It's complex and troubling and beautiful, like life. Definitely recommend this 3-volume set for a deep dive into his work. This earlier stuff shows a tone I was less familiar with - a lot of thoughts on Catholicism, childhood, and military life.
