Loved this second book in the American Heiress series! Ms. Henrie does such a fabulous job of creating enjoyable characters who are flawed yet inherently sympathetic. This story is told from the perspective of the two main characters, namely Clare and Emmett. Both Clare and Emmett love each other, but because of their unwillingness to trust the other with their deepest feelings, Clare winds up fleeing to Sicily after her doctor's suggestion to prevent a third miscarriage. Clare doesn't feel the need to tell Emmett this and Emmett wonders if Clare still loves him or if she only married him for his title. When Emmett goes to Italy to persuade Clare to return to England, an earthquake changes everything and leads to a heart wrenching finale where Clare and Emmett finally confront their marriage and if it is salvageable.

This book was hard to put down! The emotions were understandably raw when dealing with miscarriage and how devastating it is. I enjoyed both Clare and Emmett and was constantly on pins and needles to see if they would actually let down their emotional barriers and trust each other. Highly recommend this series! Each book is different and yet carries a rich depth of characters. The settings are amazing and interesting to read about. I can't wait to read the third book in the series!

I really enjoyed listening to this in audiobook format, I liked the narrator and the book was not your typical American heiress comes to England to snag an aristocrat. It had a good mix of action as well. Good clean book I would recommend it to my friends

An excellent story about a broken marriage, standing up for the truth and restoration in an unfamiliar setting in delightful historical setting.

2.5 stars This was just okay. The writing was fine- I just didn’t care for the story. It’s a romance novel about two people who are already married and have gotten in a slump. The entire thing could have been cleared up through just one honest conversation, which is a trope I hate.

Even though the natural disaster was probably supposed to spice up this story, it just kind of dragged for me.

Enjoyed reading Clare and Emmett's story (who we were first introduced to in "Night at the Opera"). I was a little frustrated with both of them at times and wished they had been more upfront and trusting with each other. Their journey was full of ups and downs and I was rooting for them all along the way!
