I think I like this series more and more with each book. This one was #6 in the series and my favorite so far. Of course, I am going to like anyone with a soft spot for dogs, but I think I also like that Andy Carpenter is a regular guy--not a big muscle-y fighting machine (think Jack Reacher or Mitch Rapp). Recommend if you like mysteries or courtroom dramas (not long and drawn out ones!)

This is a great series, I just love it. On to the next one as soon as the library gives it to me. I loved acknowledgements, too funny.

Fast easy read, very much in style anyone reading David Rosenfelt's books has come to expect. A good mystery to be uncovered in the court room

**Spoiler Alert**

A different ending, because Andy lost. Then the "murdered" woman showed up the next day alive, so his client is freed. Crazy!

When Andy Carpenter meets golden retriever Yogi, and hears he is on doggy death row for biting his owner, he knows there is more to the story. Determined to clear Yogi's name and earn him his freedom, Carpenter takes on a case that is dear to his heart. The case takes an unexpected turn when Yogi is reunited with a woman named Karen Evans whilst on a walk, and Andy finds out that Yogi has been missing (presumed dead) for the last 5 years, and his owner Richard is serving life in prison, having been found guilty of murdering his fiance.

I was wavering on this series after the 2nd or 3rd book, but having read a few more I've definitely found a rhythym with them. There's always plenty of action, they're humorous and generally an easy listen.

I wondered where Rosenfelt was taking us with the start of this book. The idea of Carpenter representing a dog in court made me chuckle, but I wondered how it was going to develop into a full story. I needn't have worried, it was a seemless transition, and quite a clever way to introduce the bigger case at the heart of the book.

The story is fast paced, with Andy and Karen in danger on frequent occasions. With that and being invested in the case and what would happen to Richard there was more than enough suspense throughout the book. There wasn't as much of Willy or Laurie in this one, but I didn't really notice that until writing this review so it can't have impacted on the story too much!

Andy gets a call from a friend who owns a dog shelter. He explains to Andy that he has a Golden Retriever that is going to be put down because it bit his owner. Knowing that Andy has a placement shelter he is hoping that he will be able to help this dog. What Andy gets into is first defending the dog from certain death by convincing a judge to order a 'Stay of Execution'. To do this Andy has to involve his friend and editor Vince to publicize the dogs story.
When the Stay is issued Andy takes the dog home until he can find a good home for him. Terra is excited to have a house mate.
Andy thinks all is well until while he is walking Terra and Yogi, Yogi takes off to leap upon a woman. The woman is Karen and she knows Yogi, and has been missing him for 5 years. The same 5 years that her brother has been in prison for the murder of his girlfriend. Being a fellow dog lover, Andy talks to Richard, who is in prison, and knows that he must do all he can to reunite the pair.
What Andy digs up is more than a mistaken murder, he finds that there are people within the government and organized crime that want Richard to stay behind bars. These people don't have a problem killing Andy or his colleagues to keep this case from being reopened.

Andy Carpenter always gets 5*s. Once again I chose the audio version read by Grover Gardner because he has become the voice in my head for this series. BUT, he almost blew it this time with his pronunciation of Monticello. Nobody in northern NJ or the Catskills ever gave that C the CH sound. Luckily it only happened a couple times and I just moved on. As far as the story, once again the dogs stole the show.

Lots of dog play in this one. Andy rescues a dog from death row only to find out the dog was considered dead in a murder suicide attempt five years previously. His original owner is in prison for a murder he didn’t commit. Andy works to get a retrial and bad things tracing to the federal government start to happen to him. What he uncovers is pretty mind boggling and downright disturbing.
