I actually didn’t finish this, idk if it’s because I’ve grown out of the shadow hunter universe or the book itself. I didn’t really care about Emma because she feels like a repeat of Jace (who I did care about but it’s boring to read the same character twice). Julian was a bit boring. I didn’t believe the relationship between Emma and Julian, the author didn’t sell that they were close in anyway, probably too much telling going on there and not enough showing. Other than that, the plot of finding out how to Emma’s parents died was also boring and felt done before.

Lady Midnight starts slowly, focussing mainly on Julian + Emma's relationship. As parabatai they are forbidden to fall in love, but they do... and it takes forever for them to admit it to each other, which to me made the first half of the book quite annoying to read.

It started off on such a good interesting note, with action and new characters and Shadowhunters actually doing their job, and then turned into your typical teenage I love my best friend but they can't ever know because they'd hate me for it story.

Eventually everything swung back around, and then it became a great read - like any other Shadowhunters novel by Cassie. I'm hoping to learn more about Cristina and her past in the future, Keiran and Mark are my absolute favorites, and I can't wait to see how things progress in Lord of Shadows.
I like the note on which the book ended, although at first I felt like the end was dragged out unnecessarily. I'm curious how things progress for Ty, who is precious in every way. Is he going to give in and become Livvy's parabatai? He probably won't be able to go to the scholomace like he wanted, but I think LoS will have more in store for him
Spoiler and Kit
.

If it hadn't been for the tedious first half, I would've given this book four stars.

well miss cassie clare picked up i guess

I love Emma, Mark, Dru and Ty with every fiber of my being. Emma is literally my type and the best protagonist I have seen, Mark is adorable and deserves the world, Dru needs more page time my dear horror enthusiast and Tiberius Nero Blackthorn. Must I say more?

I love the California setting. AND I'M TOTALLY NOT BIAS.

I love the progression of plot and the dialogue.

Also I think there will be something with this Kit Rook character and Ty. That'll be fun.

Actual Rating: 4.5 stars! I reread CoHF at the beginning of the year and it was about time I finally got to the Dark Artifices. It started a little slow but it was definitely a great start to the trilogy and the last third was full of twists and turns. I was happy to learn more about each of the Blackthorn members, adored the addition of Cristina Rosales and went on a wild ride with Emma & Julian.

Young bloods without their parents and the scar of the Dark War imprinted upon their hearts.
Faeries and mundanes being brutally murdered and the institute can't aid to the investigation.
A forbidden love blooms and trust withers away.
Friendships and love lost.
All that is left is duty and revenge.
