I really enjoyed this book, it’s light and interesting. I’d recommend it for any Pride and Prejudice fan. It’s an 19th century sapphic novel. I love period pieces that are queer stories. I enjoyed the writing style, it’s even paced and descriptive. I can put myself in the main character’s shoes.

This was a captivating story of a character from Pride and Prejudice- Anne de Bourge. As an infant she was very sickly, so the doctor put her on laudanum (a tincture of opium) to keep her calm. She more likely had a bad case of colic. She continued on this regimen throughout her childhood. She has a very controlling mother and relatively inattentive father. She later decides to blow off this medicine to gain control of her life. Also, she is an heir to a great fortune and has been betrothed to Fitzwilliam (Mr. Darcy).

This was an interesting reimagining of Anne from Pride and prejudice. I love stories from this time period and the author did a spectacular job with the development and growth of this character.

I enjoyed this take of a minor character from Pride and Prejudice. Anne de Bourg is a cousin of Darcy and had been betrothed to him from birth. However, as we know, Darcy marries Elizabeth. Anne is not bothered because she is addicted to laudanum. Eventually Anne takes control of her own destiny - this second part has a more compelling storyline but I also loved the dreamy prose of the laudanum years. Very good story. I got an advance review copy from NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton

"An extraordinary tale of one woman’s liberation, The Heiress reveals both the darkness and light in Austen’s world, with wit, sensuality, and a deeply compassionate understanding of the human heart."

This is a historical fiction novel based on Pride & Prejudice. Unlike Pride & Prejudice, I adored this book! I thought it was perfectly detailed so as to fully flesh out the characters and create a rich atmosphere. I loved and related to the protagonist's way of interacting with those around her, once she had overcome her struggle with laudanum. The romance between the two women was beautiful and full of passion. This is a novel that I am sure I will be reading again and again.

3.5 stars.

after watching price and prejudice (2005); i again became wildly obsessed with everything austen, came across this book being recc’ed on booktok and immediately started reading it.

i wont lie, the beginning was rough. too dry and fantastical and, well, boring. i almost gave up. i skipped whole chunks of text because it was just repetitive.

but it got better. to anyone who’s on the verge of giving up thanks to that atrocious beginning, it does get better. when the governess shows up, that’s when it gets interesting.

my favourite part of the story is how anne grows into her own as someone who takes action and breaks out from her shell. when she finally stepped up, i screamed. the romance was also cute as hell and didn’t feel forced. i thought we were going to get a sad ending but thankfully, it’s a good one.

(also to be perfectly honest, i was living for the casual darcy and elizabeth mentions. i am and always will be pride and prejudice trash)
