In My Father's Brain, Sandeep Jauhar writes about his father's diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and charts the course of his decline up until his death. This is a particularly interesting memoir in that it is a nice mix of both the events going on with his father as well as technical information about dementia, especially coming from a doctor himself (though he is a cardiologist). Jauhar's parents move closer to be nearer to family as they age in place. He is particularly concerned with his mother who has Parkinson's Disease and it decompensating. His father's decline is not very noticeable at first, but cannot be ignored after some time. This is a pretty unflinching look at what someone's decline with the disease looks like. I appreciated the Sandeep and his brother and sister's different takes on how to approach their father. It was interesting that I read Sandeep to be in the deepest denial of the three siblings. Additionally, the dilemma on whether or not to lie to their father when he got confused in order to not make him upset is something that I know is a struggle with caregivers. This is a an approachable and informative book on a devestating illness, which I would recommend anyone read who wants to learn more about the personal side of dementia.

My takeaway is that this disease is even difficult for families and carers who are medical professionals. Dr. Jauhar unflinchingly shares his family's experience as he and his siblings navigated their father's dementia.
