the feeling of seeing art that makes emotion choke up in your throat but not knowing exactly how to express it or identify what it is....yeah.....

I have been trying to read this since June 2020, I think it’s time to let it go

this is about a 3.5. some of the chapters i really enjoyed, and i generally liked all the discussion of art and artists. i have a bunch of tabs on my phone that i opened while reading– laura owens, cerith wyn evans, and so on. ultimately, though, i became less interested the further into the book i got, starting from maybe half of 3/4 of the way through. still a solid read

I loved the experience of reading this book. I love the way Pham writes about art and love and travel and food and belonging. I didn't Google anything she writes about, except for Agnes Martin's grids, just bathed in her descriptions of the work. It made me eager to go back into galleries and museums and discover art again in my own life. A gorgeous book.

raw and deeply vulnerable — made me want to slow down just to absorb everything Pham was thinking and feeling. possibly my favorite essay collection ever, specifically Body of Work and Camera Roll. <3
