There are not a lot of commentaries out that discuss books like 1 & 2 Maccabees. Unless you get a study Bible that contains these books, then you will be probably unaware of them. However, they are extremely important to understanding the background of Judea - not only for those seeking to understand the New Testament but for historians whom are trying to piece together the Hasmonean era.

The book gives introductions to each book & discusses their importance. Following that, breakdowns into macro & micro sections. It flows in the order of the book, but with some cross referencing for other parts of the book as well as links to motifs from the Hebrew Bible that these 2 books use as their audience would notice these patterns.

I thought the book broke down these 2 works well. Although not thorough, it is also not tedious. It references some somewhat recent developments in the study of this period. Overall, it is a good primer into this field of study.
