I enjoyed the multitude of characters and the variety in personalities, in particular the greed displayed in Mr. and Mrs. John Dashwood, as well in Lucy Steele. The scene in which the Dashwood Couple diminishes the financial support to be given to their sisters (-in law) is truly a timeless comedic scene.
Additionally I enjoyed the fact that one‘s opinion could change with the characters, for Elinor‘s reasonable reflections made me question the conduct of characters more thoroughly. At first, for instance, Lucy‘s misconduct, in being ready to abandon the man who lost all connections due to his engagement with her and then just one upping him for his brother, didn’t strike me quite so severe at first. Rather I was mostly extremely surprised, which is why I liked Elinor breaking down her horror for Lucy‘s character and deeds.
Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with the ending, since Marianne‘s marriage was essentially only a footnote - unbelievable, considering her convictions towards love and marriage. Indeed I was surprised how her ending was treated to abrupt, as though her heartbreak wasn’t the centerpiece of this story.
All in all I am fond of this book and thought it to be a refreshing read after Pride and Prejudice, for not every character in here is rich or marries rich. If there would have been a more detailed approach to Marianne‘s engagement and perhaps even more scenes with Colonal Brandon, this novel would have been even better. Nevertheless, I am confident in saying that I find Jane Austens writing very engaging and amusing. Thus I look forward to finally read my copy of ,,Persuasion“ which is currently lying on the desk across from me.

The beginning is hard to get through, but the conclusion is worth the persevering. A typical Jane Austen, with good characters and realistic dialogue and scenes. The two older sisters face the same trials in love and finish well. Their story is a sea of emotions and turns in the road, just like real life. I would recommend Jane Austen to any girl as a good model.

I really loved this book. The contrast between the sisters and how they each go about life and love made for insightful discussions. Foils without being obvious or cliché. Concepts of class, communication, romantic and maternal love.
