This book is a tour de force!!
I’ve loved jensen for a while, but this book combined everything that makes her writing wonderful. Her characters jump off the page, the worlds are lush and descriptive, and the plot (while familiar) is different than everything I’ve read before.
I will never stop recommending books and seeing how the different characters came together in this makes me all the more excited for book 4 of her dark shores series!
Ps - this is only available as an audiobook. I listened to this 16 hour audiobook in the span of 40 hours… so that’s how good it is

First 5⭐️ read of 2024. I think this may be my most favourite fantasy fiction series. I haven’t personally seen many fantasy books that heavily revolve around politics like this - it really makes the plot interesting and adds to the story.
The villain was also written so well; a true narcissist whose manipulative personality is captured perfectly. Seeing how she implanted her voice and beliefs into Zarrah’s mind actually helped me understand why Zarrah struggled so much. And made her less irritating.
Danielle writes with the perfect amount of intensity. Like this had me STRESSED at so many points. But the end was worth it.

Great book! I always love reading Danielle L Jensen and The whole Bridge Kingdom series lives in my heart.
That being said, of all the books in the series I think this was my least favourite. It tied up all the strings but wasn’t a phenomenal read. Good and enjoyable, but, with the exception of two chapters, felt predictable. Like she wrote the book to end it but not because she was so inspired.

Okay, so cannibalism ?
Obviously, that's not the main focus of the book, but somehow that's what sticks out in my memory the most. Why was it so drawn out and brought up so often late in the book???
Moving on, this felt like The Traitor Queen Redux. I was intrigued by the warring tribes on the island, and I wanted to see how they got off the island. But beyond that, it was very reminiscent in vibes to TTQ. I still prefer it to TTQ though, because I prefer Zarrah and Keris to Lara and Aren.
Also, I never want to hear the phrase “the usurper” again.
