This is a curious book - it has quite a slow beginning, with a long prologue that gives us some historical detail about the characters we are going to meet. I didn't feel as if the prologue was necessary - pretty much all of this information comes out anyway during the story. But the rest of the book is beautiful. Aldridge's style has an old-fashioned feel to it, and the story of this long hot summer in Provence, with the damaged boy, the wild girl and all the other fascinating characters, is entrancing. And the ending is perfect.
