Oh what a tangled web we weave.
A quirky writing style left me scratching my head at first, but I'm glad I persisted with this one.
The best character in this look at a very grubby world was a sociopathic psychiatrist, Luke Carrington who dissects other people's problems without a qualm or any true feelings. Murder, prostitution and other assorted felonies and criminal idiosyncrasies are interesting, but nothing more.
None of the characters wear white hats, but many are far greyer than others, although each has a reason, usually childhood trauma and mental ill-health for their wickedness.
It is a slow read, very much dialogue driven with a great deal of inner thoughts about what the other person said, and what the characters are thinking rather than saying. Action does start to creep in in the last third or so of the book and this is what makes it a four star for me, particularly the scenes with Luke Carrington. I tried to sympathise with the central character, Lucy, but I just couldn't do it, her continual defence of the real 'baddie' was irritating. It did have a satisfying and surprising ending.
In my personal opinion, at least a third could be edited out, mostly in the first half to make it a more 'thrilling' thriller.
