Much better than the last, mostly because this one didn't have to tie in with the Blackest Night event. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love Gail Simone's writing! The plots are intriguing, the dialogue is hilarious, and the character work is some of the best I've ever read.
This story features what might be the best revenge plot I've ever read! Someone's kidnapped Catman and Cheshire's son and Catman is on a quest to kill everyone involved. It's brutal! Surprisingly so, especially for a book from the Big Two instead of an independent label. Catman is a beast! This volume shows some of his childhood, which was harder for me to read because it was domestic violence and animal abuse. That story, "Cats in the Cradle", is half Thomas' story and half the rest of the squad looking for them.
I continue to really like the familial relationship between Bane and Scandal. This volume delved more into Alice and Ragdoll's relationship. It gets a little too teenage girl-ish for my taste, but I'm glad Scandal reacted to Alice's tantrum like an adult. We get a bit more of Alice's story in this volume. There's a very, very small subplot where Bane hires out a new crew because he and the banshee are still trying to take jobs while the rest of their usual crew try to help Thomas.
Ostrander wrote the issue where the team get lured to an island where 6 (completely new and one dimensional) characters are playing the Most Dangerous Game with the Secret Six. There's no real character work here but it's okay to read. Mostly just "look how skilled everyone is" which we already knew at this point.
The last issue is a Western AU of sorts where the team are all characters set in the 1800s. I'm not sure if it actually ties into the others somehow, but I found it enjoyable.

Secret Six at its most dark and dysfunctional. Huge strides in characterization for my favorite comic book buddy comedy, Catman and Deadshot. Secret Six volume 3 has some astoundingly good character development for both, and like she did with Bane, Gail Simone writes the definitive Deadshot. If you've made it this far into Secret Six, you know what you're getting into. A fantastic part of a fantastic series.
