Some books make you sob and others leave you with a lump in your throat that you cannot express
Clap when you land was the latter

I'm usually skeptical about reading books written in verse, but after I heard Elizabeth Acevedo read parts of this live and there was absolutely no way I could not buy it
i had literal tears in my eyes

The writing evokes so many emotions and has such beautiful imagery, i wanted to make it last as long as possible

You know how you read a poem and one line sticks with you forever? Thats what it was like reading this book— every verse left an imprint on my heart

I would 100% recommend
It did get a tad bit dragged out at times but the writing was so incredibly beautiful you couldn't stop reading it

It was also a very quick read

It is now weeks later that I write this review and I still think about this book! It made me feel just about every emotion. It made me reflect on my life and not many books make me do that because I like to escape. This was my first Elizabeth Acevedo book and her real and rawness sucked me in like a tornado in the night!

I sympathized with Camino and Yahaira the entire book. Their bond that kept growing warmed my heart. They lost their hero and dealt with the secrets and pain far better than the adults. I wished things happened differently but this book reminded me that everything isn’t glitter and gold.It also taught me life is full of heartache and loss but, there is love in unexpected places and you can choose to do things differently despite the cards you are dealt.

Very compelling and well-written, though I wish we heard more of the moms' perspectives too.

I think this is my third summer in a row listening to an Elizabeth Acevedo novel on audio. This year, I did not get to do a road trip to Maine, so had to "read" it in shorter snippets. Still worth it. She is a master of creating plots, characters, and language that completely capture me. Because this one is told in two voices, she has a second narrator join her on the audiobook, but both deliveries were equally powerful. Overall, I did not rate this one as high as her two previous books because it felt a bit less complete, but still recommend anything she writes highly! (and especially encourage you to listen to her read it!)
