“Kinsella takes my hand in his. As soon as he takes it, I realize my father has never once held my hand, and some part of me wants Kinsella to let me go so I won’t have to feel this. It’s a hard feeling but as we walk along I begin to settle and let the difference between my life at home and the one I have here be.”

A foot wide and a mile deep, this is a beautiful novel about familial love outside of a biological family, the struggles of poverty as a child, and opening up to other possibilities after loss. I do not cry much since I have cried while reading a book, but this one broke the streak.

The pastoral tone of this novella is comforting until suddenly it isn’t and the reader is locked in an eerie space.

Eloquent prose becomes disarming over time.

The rural setting lends itself to the strange calm that gradually leads into something unnerving. The characters are complicated, mysterious, and their true motives hidden.

I appreciated a view of grief from a slightly different angle. This novella takes the views of a child surrounding dark and difficult topics and plants them in the natural pleasant landscape of the Irish countryside. I felt simultaneously calmed and unnerved.

Claire Keegan is just so good at painting vivid landscapes and deeply compelling characters. It is so impressive to see what she achieves in such a small amount of pages, this is a book that conjured up an entire world and a believable child’s pov. Full of heartbreak and longing and bittersweet joy, I just can’t get enough of how Keegan writes.
