4* but reluctantly bumped to 5 bc I couldn't put the book down. Even now I fall into the obsidian stone

While I love the "Black Jewels", I didn't really enjoy the last two. In my opinion, the stories were forced, for lack of a better word, to continue a storyline that didn't need to be continued. The Daemon and Surreal storyline continuation seemed strained.

Best one since original trilogy.

Scene with Daemon and Mrs. Beale *chefs kiss*. Pun intended.

I did not like this book to be honest. Quality wise it was the same as the other books in this series however, the story I found unpalatable. I feel that it was forced together to make chemistry where there was none before hand. Surreal being Daemons wife is not something I can agree with or appreciate. If you disliked this book for the same reasons, the next book does make up for it.

2.6 is where I feel it is as of now.
So far the book has become something to feed the fans desire to stay connected and see what happened. While I appreciate that, and there are many series I wish to have that, I feel that this has the quality of soap opera writing and not nearly the same quality as I have come to enjoy. A lot of the believability in how certain characters act, are not in line to whom they were, the plot does not grab and have the same depth.

5 star - Perfect
4 star - i would recommend
3 star - good
2 star - struggled to complete
1 star - could not finish (less) [edit]

The first part of the book takes place shortly after The Queen's Bargain and catches the reader up on what's been happening with all our favorite characters. The children are still very young (in terms of the long-aged races) and into various pursuits. Sadi and Surreal had come to a somewhat uneasy compromise in their marriage, and Lucivar is ...well, Lucivar.
Centuries pass and the three oldest children are now older teenagers. Daemonar had made his blood run and is tutored by Witch, becoming the third edge of the triangle that is her weapons. Jaenelle Saetien is spoiled and under a bad influence, a young witch who intends to emulate Dorothea. Titian is growing up in a quieter manner, interested in exploring the world of art. The emphasis of the story is on the younger generation, though there's plenty of Sadi, Surreal, Witch, Lucivar, Karla, and the rest. I don't want to give too much away, but I was completely satisfied with the story and the ending. I admit that I'd intending to go to bed early but ended up reading to the end because I just couldn't put the book down.
It's a compelling story that takes up back to the first three books of the series in a funhouse mirror image of Jaenelle Angelline's childhood. Every year I pre-order Ms. Bishop's book for the next year as soon as I'm able, and I'm never disappointed, whether it takes place in the world of the Black Jewels, the Others, or any other of her series. She's a fabulous and original author who always delivers.

I have adored this series from the start, but I just can't love where it has gone lately. I was never a fan of the Daemon/Surreal pairing - especially since it was more of convenience. Both characters deserved better than what they have, and to have a kid like Jaenelle Saetine.

First off- Oh My Gawd how dense is this pampered kid?!?
You want me to believe that a person lives with this group of amazing people for CENTURIES and is so obtuse and oblivious to the way things are?! She can't even show proper respect to her parents or the people who serve in the house?
I just can't. And I hate how this kid doesn't learn until it's all shoved in her face for the millionth time. How has no one ever explained how things were before? Even a sheltered kid should known certain things. Uuuuggghhhh. I know "teenagers" are self centered an bratty, but hell.
Overall the storyline was good. The plot was good. The characters were (mostly) fun, though Zoey could have been explored a lot more and it would have made me happy.
Jaenelle Saetine is the worst kind of spoiled, ignorant, entitled brat, and her "redemption" is also crap. I'm reading now for the other main characters but the relationships in it just sours a bit.
