This is a perfect book. Seriously. Perfect.
I'd been hesitant to read Truman Capote's fiction because, in my head, he's much beloved of girls who think Audrey Hepburn is Holly Golightly and that Holly Golightly is aspirational, and I find that whole thing a little troubling. Regardless. I shouldn't have waited so long to read this.

While I am not sure I would reread this book, it definitely was worth reading once. There were times when I felt the mysteriousness of the story was similar to Rebecca by Daphne du Murier. I am glad I decided to pick it up.
"The brain may take advice, but not the heart, and love, having no geography, knows no boundaries: weight and sink it deep, no matter, and it will rise and find the surface: and why not? Any love is natural and beautiful that lies within a persons nature; only hypocrites would hold a man responsible for what he loves, emotional illiterates and those of righteous envy, who, in their agitated concern, mistake so frequently the arrow pointing to heaven for the one that leads to hell." (147)
"What we want most is to only to be held... and told... that everything (everything is a funny thing, is baby's milk and papa's eyes, is roaring logs on a cold morning, is hoot owls and the boy who makes you cry after school, is Mama's long hair, is being afraid and twisted faces on the bedroom wall) ... everything is going to be all right." (148-9)
"Loneliness, like fever, thrives on night, but there with him light broke, breaking in the trees like birdsong, and when sunrise came, he loosened his fingers from mine, and walked away, that misty boy, my friend." (149)

Capote's first published book, a southern gothic tale. The writing is very descriptive - every element from the weather to the plants in the garden, and, of course the characters - evoke something sinister in the world in which young Joel Knox finds himself. There are many symbols, too, that contribute to the darkness - dreams and mirrors. While racial differences certainly play a role in the story, it is a minor one. The dominant themes are courage and trust.
