Saving Sophie

Way faster more intense and page turning than The Girl on the Train this thriller had me finding any spare minute to pick it up.

How would you feel if your daughter is returned to you by policemen with no real explanation and no memory of what has happened.

This story follows a weaving plot of twists and turns too gripping to be spoilt.

The writing is great and flows at a fast pace in short chapters following Sophie, her mother Karen and the introduction to DI Wade and DCI Mack (don't ever make them a love thang just saying dry wit and stealthy problem solving is all they need).

For a first novel I am loathe to compare but found it hard not to with the praise of GoTT. I didn't hate all the characters straight away, your lulled into false security with some and that I just knew it feeling with others that makes a good thriller.

The family dynamic felt unique too with the addition of Karen's medical condition putting tension when needed in just the right places.

**This book was kindly given in arc format from Netgalley for Harper Collins UK but the pleasure and honest review was all mine**

Poorly written and story seemed unbelievable even for a thriller so glad I didnt pay too much for this book

My thanks to the publisher for an arc of this book in return for an honest review.

This book is a psychological thriller and certainly lives up to this. From the first page I knew this was going to be a tense and emotional read and it certainly was.

It starts off with 17 year old Sophie who is bought home by the police after a night out in a very disorientated state. She can't remember anything about what happened to her and how she got to be in such a state. Her friend is missing and then a body is found. Does Sophie know more than she's letting on ? Sophie's mother Karen is battling her own demons and suffers terrible anxiety issues which makes it difficult to leave her house. This causes problems for Karen and Sophie in the story.

An excellent debut novel by Sam Carrington and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Honestly. This book was such a drag. The main characters were the whiniest characters I've ever known. Everyone in this book was stupid. I'm only giving it 2 stars because I liked the very very end.

Why does no one ever go to the police??
Some aspects of the book frustrated me but overall I was caught up in the story and it was hard to put down.
I found the epilogue very interesting, I didn't expect it and I can't stop thinking about what would happen to the characters in the future.

I picked this up on a whim as it sounded like Reconstructing Amelia. I do like thrillers which focus on family relationships between mothers and daughters. What are the nuances we are not seeing?

This started off strong with forgotten memories and questions. Karen is agoraphobic because of an attack on her a few years ago. Then the incident with her daughter blows up as a missing girl does not come home. I liked the way the story is told from different povs and the writing was good.

But the characters were forgettable, there was hardly any context to them. I had to struggle to remember who was who. Mike was such bad husband to Karen, it seems only Sophie tries to understand her condition and anxiety. Sophie seems to have a good head on her shoulders but she goes back and forth from aggressive teenager to understanding daughter. Karen was lazy, she did nothing at home as she can't go out. I have only read another book about an atrophic which is Woman in the Window so I can't say I understand the condition fully. But Karen irritated me when she could not support her best friend.

I wished that Karen and Sophie had gone to the police earlier and the police were not very competent. They did not seem to know what to do, It was all half hearted.

I would say that the revelation was surprising but the end was confusing. Then I found out that this is a series that follows the detectives who took the case. Well okay.

Good book. Some parts were unfortunately a little unbelievable. Such as the fact that they wait for way too long to contact the police. Maybe it's me, but I don't think people are that stupid.
Other than that, it was a decent mystery/crime book.

A perfect example of a true psychological thriller!
Two police officers deliver your teenage daughter home one night. She is completely incoherent and was found wandering along a road. This happens to Karen, who is an agoraphobic who hasn't been able to leave her house unaided for the past two years. The following morning Karen's daughter, Sophie, is still no clearer about what exactly happened the previous night, but her friend, Amy, is missing and the police start investigating.
The perspectives are mainly those of Karen and Sophie, but there are also minor chapters from the perspective of DI Lindsay Wade and her colleague DS Mack as well as emails written by somebody whose identity isn't clear.
Both, Karen and Sophie, are very well characterized and although I found myself shouting at them several times, their actions and decisions remained credible considering their backgrounds and circumstances. The family dynamics between mother, daughter and the father, Mike, who remained in the background a lot of the time, were done in a very believable manner.
Because of Karen's frequent panic attacks, there was a lot about breathing in this book, and quite cleverly, it affected my own heart rate several times. I finished this a little while ago and still feel I need to go for a dog walk to calm down. This really was intense, right from the explosive prologue to the utterly brilliant epilogue. I was glued to the pages for the last 30%.
Initially, I was wondering why there was so much focus on Karen. But as the story progresses, [a:Sam Carrington|15308494|Sam Carrington|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1469702659p2/15308494.jpg]'s meticulous plotting reveals secrets and surprises that uncover a very twisted tale and the different strands come together perfectly. There was nothing predictable about this story. Great how social media, the Internet, and our online lives were integrated into the plot. I also loved the setting in Devon with Dartmoor providing a creepy atmosphere.
This is a debut novel from a writer who is clearly hugely talented. I was very pleased to see [a:Sam Carrington|15308494|Sam Carrington|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1469702659p2/15308494.jpg] is already working on her next book featuring DI Wade and DS Mack.
Highly recommended if you like nail-biting psychological thrillers! Just make sure you have time set aside because you may want to finish this in one sitting.
Many thanks to Harper Collins UK for my ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
