This book was filled with characters I mostly didn't like. Everyone seemed so angry all the time, or just really shitty. In fact, Omri was about the only character who was likable. Little Bear was a jerk, Boone was annoying, I detested Patrick, the teachers were mean, and the brothers weren't all that great either. The only reason the parents get a pass is because they weren't in the book enough for me to form an opinion of them.
i got this on CD for a roadtrip. My mom read it to us on vacation when we were little, character voices and all, so the great thing about it was every so often I would get a flash of my mom's voice instead of the narrator, and remember how my family collapsed in laughter at the weepy but determined cowboy and the brave and demanding indian! very fun story with intelligence and heart.

This wasn't what I thought it would be. It's a lot more science fiction than I thought and a lot more about how to treat people the right way than it is about cowboys and Indians.
Oh man. I loved this book when I was a kid because the idea of bringing toys to life is pure magic. But it was painful for me to read this aloud to my child. There are some cringe-inducing stereotypes and language, which of course I didn't remember from childhood. The Iroquois man speaks in broken English, the cowboy sounds like a drunken hick, and the Iroquois woman (who only appears briefly at the end), doesn't get a chance to speak at all. Also, I had to skip over many references to "scalping."
But: There is some magic in this story. Omri loves his Indian and wants to protect him. He becomes his guardian and learns about friendship. And it prompted some interesting discussions about hateful speech, stereotypes, and whether some secrets should be kept.

Old Children's Book. Liked it as a kid, but haven't read it in years.
