Ugh. Okay, so I feel bad giving this such a low rating because my kids LOVED it. There's action, adventure, and just enough peril to make it interesting. But oh my lord, if I didn't want to smack Patrick in his big ol' head! Worst. Friend. Ever.
I understand that this book was written in 1980 but there's so many racist undertones that it's hard to read it as an adult and not cringe.

It is pretty good. Easy to read, but the story plot was nice. I liked it, and I think other people would enjoy it was well.

Super fun to read with Finn.

I remember liking this a lot when I was in 5th grade. I read it again because my 3rd grader was reading it.

First time I've read this since 1994! The plot is something all kids think about or imagine, even before "Toy Story": what if our toys were alive?? So that's fun, but I don't remember the swears... or the slightly veiled racism. However, in my opinion the book isn't without merit; in every instance, Little Bull is stronger, smarter, braver, and even more hygienic than the cowboy, Boone. Molly and I listened to the audio book, read by the author, and got a kick every time how she pronounced "plas-tic" in Little Bull's voice. We both HATED listening to the blood brothers part - yuck! Shudder. I will have to ask her if she wants the next ones.

Bryant and I really enjoyed this one, but he was a little disappointed in the end. I imagine he wanted it to continue with more adventures. I think we'll keep it at four stars.

This was really fun to revisit with my kids. I loved this book growing up, and I loved it upon rereading it as well.

Our whole family read this book as part of a family read that my daughters school did. It was a fun and interesting story, but I was a little disappointed that there was some profanity in what would otherwise have been a great kids book.

Great read to stimulate imagination in any kid. My 8yo and 4yo loved it as a read aloud.

A little boy discovers a magic key that when used in an old medicine cupboard, can bring his plastic toys to life. In discovering this magic though he learns a lot about the danger of secrets and how magic can affect others. He also learns how to treat others and how others can change. This was a very well written book. Parents should read this book with their children and have a discussion about behavior and the treatment of other human beings.
