I read this in class back in 4th or 5th grade and it happened to stand out as a memory for me, so I decided to read this to my kids to see if there was still magic in it. I do think the book is a bit outdated and certainly uses some tropes, but I would say that there is a lot of heart in this one and written with good intentions. There is a lot to enjoy about this little adventure and fun to share with the kids.
I don't remember much except that I loved this book! I didn't realize that it was part of a series...or maybe I did.
A childhood favorite I had completely forgotten about.

Biggest problem is the stereotyping of American Indians
A little old in some way for Mikey, but he loved the idea so much, we couldn't stay away. He's already been playing "indian in the cupboard" with the kids at school during recess.
The boys loved this book sooo much! They are begging me to get the sequel!
I loved this book when I was little, because it was so full of magic and wonder. Like anything that isn't obviously of interest my daughter want excited by the prospects of reading this together. After a chapter or two she was begging for more though, and she is doing for us to read book two.
As I was about to read the last chapter my son commented that he didn't know where the story was going because it didn't build up to anything. I realized that he was right. There's no real plot to this book. No problem, no climax, no story arc. My kids all listened respectfully but none of them were excited about this book.
