Outstanding take on what could have been a successful fight against the pandemic.
A really compelling look at the back channel conversations that were going on before and during the initial pandemic response. It follows the people who set up the pandemic plan under Bush and Obama.

Interesting, captivating - and absolutely infuriating. The US healthcare system is so utterly broken at every level.
Anyone who cares about the pandemic or is interested at all in how COVID-19 works must read this!!!
I wasn't sure I was ready to read this book, but boy I am glad I did. As we all try to make sense of what "happened to us/U.S." over the past 1+ years, this books provides helpful perspective.
Michael Lewis is such a good story teller. If you can bear to read one book about the pandemic, this is it. It's a sad tale of the failure of the American government, the CDC and the public health system while, at the same time, a story of hope in a group of individuals who rose to the occasion to make a difference.
This book is a fantastic explanation of both the public health system in the United States and infectious diseases. It was easy to understand, each part of the story felt necessary and applicable, and the individuals followed were complex and endearing. Lewis is able to come to conclusions supported by strong evidence and refrains from wholly blaming any one institution or politician (as was seen commonly throughout Covid). While this book touches on Covid, it's about so much more and is able to take from past pandemics (1918 & Swine Flu) and Covid in order to highlight issues within American government and public health that need to be addressed in order to prevent further crises.
This is investigative journalism at its peak! Such an amazing + insightful read, especially for someone studying public health. No matter what your interests are, this book can appeal to you. The issues of public health, as denoted by the term *public*, impact ALL OF US + I think there are some things that this book reveals that will shock you about health and politics.
I kept a highlighter with me as I was reading this book, and I quite literally had to stop myself from highlighting entire pages. What started out as a book for one of my classes has turned into one of my favorite reads OF ALL TIME. Michael Lewis truly has an incredibly gift with writing.
Here are some thought-provoking quotes from this book:
“You cannot wait for the smoke to clear: once you see things clearly it is already too late.”
“You can’t outrun an epidemic: by the time you start to run it is already upon you.”
If I can just leave you with one thing, it would be this: PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!!!
