An insightful look at the backstory leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how poorly prepared the government was for this kind of scenario. Michael Lewis has done an incredible amount of research in this novel, going back decades to the swine flu (H1N1 virus), bird flu (H5N1) and the people that had the insight and "premonition" to foresee what kind of virus could quickly impact and spread not just across the country but across the world.
I appreciated how well-written this novel was, as it would be easy to just transform into a rote textbook or documentation of timeline and facts, but Lewis gave character and color to a number of individuals, highlighting just how much they contributed to the eventual handling of the pandemic many years later. An eye-opening read, and well-worth the pages.

I’ve been waiting to read Pandemic books because I know they will make me angry—this one definitely did, but Lewis is such a good storyteller and the story is so important that I enjoyed the book immensely.
Another Michael Lewis gem. It confirmed the incompetence of the DJT administration, and the fact that states were left to fend for themselves. The people who took it upon themselves to try to hold off the tsunami were amazing, every single one. My big takeaway was having the veil removed from my eyes about the CDC being capable of acting quickly. Nope, not at all. Thank goodness we still have some innovators in this country who don't care about glory, and just want to get the job done. Carter Mecher, Joe DeRisi, and Charity Dean are my new personal heroes.
Another great book. I only have one criticism. I don't think he knows or interviewed the thousands of people who work at the big labs. Most of them sacrificed a lot to help the country. It was not for a bigger paycheck. The book portrays those companies as insensitive corporations only interested in profit. Knowing some of those people; that is not at all true.
