Most of the stories included here don't seem to have much reason for existing and only a couple really grabbed me. Riding the Bullet built up some decent tension and The Little Sisters of Eluria was a fun sidestory for Roland Deschain but it really just made me wish I was reading a Dark Tower book instead.

This is probably the first short story collection I’ve ever read that I’ve actually enjoyed all of the stories. Some were just good but a lot of them actually scared me. My favourites were “the man in the black suit”, “the road virus heads north”, “1408” and “riding the bullet”. Can’t wait to read more short story collections from King!

I'm happy I finally read it but the movie is definitely better, in my opinion (I really feel like I'm saying that a lot recently). It was definitely creepy in the latter half and I think the story does a better job of showcasing Mike's dwindling mental state but the first half was simply his conversation with Olin. It felt a lot more like telling rather than showing. I also felt that the story lacked a lot of what made the movie so great. The repetitiveness of oddities in the room were missing as was Mike's complex backstory which made him a much more likable and relatable character. For example, in this story we don't have any insight into why Mike is obsessed with hauntings when he clearly doesn't believe in the paranormal. However, in the movie, Mike's obsession stems from the pain he feels over his daughter's premature death and his unconscious desire to know that she is at peace. I know it's a short story but it lacked so much of the depth that the movie had and it just wasn't nearly as enjoyable to me. (Perhaps I'm biased; 1408 is one of my favorite movies). I hope my next Stephen King is better. 3.5 stars.

the first book of short stories that touched my black little heart.
